About this book

First published in English in 1898, The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage is one of the most influential works associated with the Western ceremonial magical tradition. Translated and edited by S. L. MacGregor Mathers from a French manuscript held at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal in Paris, the work presents a system of spiritual preparation, angelic communication and ceremonial magic that became particularly influential among twentieth-century occultists.

The text is presented as the account of Abraham the Jew, who describes his travels in search of genuine magical knowledge and his eventual encounter with Abramelin, an Egyptian mage from whom he receives the teachings that form the basis of the work.

The second book contains the central Abramelin operation: an extended period of prayer, purification and disciplined observance intended to culminate in what Mathers describes as the “Knowledge and Conversation” of the Holy Guardian Angel. Only after this spiritual attainment does the system proceed to the invocation and command of spirits, placing religious devotion and divine authority at the centre of its approach to magic.

The third book contains the work’s distinctive magical word squares. Arranged in lettered grids, these are associated with a wide range of operations and are intended to be employed only after the practitioner has completed the spiritual preparation described earlier in the text.

Mathers’s 1898 translation introduced the Abramelin tradition to a much wider English-speaking readership. Although Mathers presented the work as a fifteenth-century manuscript, subsequent research into other surviving manuscripts has complicated both the dating and textual history of the work. His translation nevertheless became highly influential within modern ceremonial magic and helped establish concepts associated with Abramelin in twentieth-century Western occultism.

For readers of grimoires, Hermeticism and the history of ceremonial magic, The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage provides an important record of a magical system in which ritual practice is inseparable from religious devotion, personal discipline and the pursuit of spiritual authority.

Mathers translated and edited several of the foundational grimoires of the Western esoteric tradition, working from manuscripts held in the British Museum and the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal.

His editions remain the versions most widely read today, and this printing follows his text closely while restoring the plates omitted from later reprints.
