About this book

First published in 1923, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry is one of Manly P. Hall’s earliest works on the philosophical and symbolic traditions of Freemasonry. Written several years before his much larger The Secret Teachings of All Ages, it already displays the interest in symbolism, initiation and ancient wisdom that would occupy Hall throughout his career.

Hall is less concerned with providing a conventional history of Freemasonry than with asking what its ceremonies and symbols might mean to the individual Mason. He presents the lodge as a place of moral and philosophical instruction, interpreting its traditions as stages in the development of character, knowledge and self-discipline.

The central chapters follow the progression of the Masonic degrees. Hall considers the Candidate, the Entered Apprentice, the Fellow Craft and the Master Mason, before turning to what he regards as the qualifications of a true Mason. Throughout these sections, familiar Masonic ideas of building and craftsmanship become metaphors for the shaping of the individual. Wikisource

The book also places Masonry within the wider esoteric tradition that fascinated Hall. Its discussions draw connections between Masonic symbolism, initiation, Hermetic thought and the search for wisdom. The addenda include material relating to the Emerald Tablet of Hermes, further illustrating the broader philosophical framework through which Hall approached the subject.

The Lost Keys of Freemasonry is therefore best understood as an interpretation of Masonry rather than a documentary history of the institution. Hall reads its degrees and symbols through his own esoteric philosophy, searching beneath ritual forms for principles he believed concerned the moral and spiritual development of the individual.

For readers interested in Freemasonry, symbolism, initiation and twentieth-century esoteric thought, the book also provides an early introduction to ideas that Hall would explore on a much greater scale in his later writings.

About this author

Manly P. Hall

1901-1990

Manly Palmer Hall (1901–1990) was a Canadian-born author, lecturer and scholar of philosophy, religion and the Western esoteric tradition. After settling in Los Angeles as a young man, he devoted his life to the study of ancient philosophy, mythology, comparative religion, symbolism, mysticism and the occult. In 1928, at just twenty-seven years old, Hall published his magnum opus, The Secret Teachings of All Ages, an ambitious encyclopedic study that established his reputation as one of the twentieth century’s most influential writers on esoteric philosophy. He later founded the Philosophical Research Society in 1934 and continued writing and lecturing for more than five decades, producing over 150 books and essays during his lifetime.
