About this book
The Black Pullet, originally published in French as La Poule Noire, is an anonymous grimoire devoted principally to the construction and supposed powers of magical talismans and rings. Emerging from the French occult publishing tradition around the turn of the nineteenth century, it combines a magical handbook with an imaginative narrative shaped by contemporary fascination with Egypt and ancient secret knowledge.
The story is presented through the experiences of a French military officer in Egypt. After surviving an attack, the narrator encounters an elderly teacher who introduces him to magical knowledge said to have been preserved through ancient traditions. This narrative provides the framework for instructions concerning talismans, rings, spirits and other occult operations.
Central to the work is a series of illustrated talismans associated with particular powers. These include the discovery of hidden things and treasures, protection, knowledge and the command of supernatural beings. The text also discusses the conjuration of spirits traditionally described as sylphs, undines and gnomes. Its most famous operation concerns the Black Pullet itself—the legendary hen said to produce golden eggs and thereby provide its possessor with wealth.
Despite its claims to ancient wisdom, the book should not be treated as an authentic survival of Egyptian or classical magical teaching. Its elaborate claims of transmission belong to the literary framework of the grimoire, while its historical context lies in the European occult publishing culture in which such works circulated.
The Black Pullet remains an unusual example of popular grimoire literature, bringing together talismanic magic, spirit lore and an imagined Egypt in a work that reflects European fascination with both occult knowledge and the ancient world.
